Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids are what most people have in mind when they think about hearing aids. They hook onto the back of the ear. They connect to an inserted mold in the ear. The plastic part behind the ear holds the hearing aid’s primary components. Behind-the-ear hearing aids have several benefits. First, they are more powerful than other hearing aids. The mold is not inserted as deeply as others and easier to maintain than other hearing aids.

Mini Behind-the-Ear (Receiver in Canal)

Mini behind-the-ear (RIC) hearing aids are like behind-the-ear hearing aids in several ways. They also have a plastic housing for the electronics that sit behind the ear. One of the main differences between mini BTE hearing aids and BTE’s is the size. The mini BTE has a smaller housing than the original BTE hearing aids. An advantage is the ability to hide these hearing aids for a more discreet look. They also share a lot of the same benefits as behind-the-ear hearing aids.

In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids have all their components housed in one complete package. The hearing aid sits in the outer ear. They are sometimes easier to handle and use than behind-the-ear hearing aids because they are all one. Users only need a little dexterity to install them. Many people believe they are more discreet than behind-the-ear options. The device is also often skin-colored. In-the-ear hearing aids are more comfortable because they are custom-made for the user.

In-the-Canal and Completely-in-Canal

In-the-canal (ITC) and completely in-canal (CIC) hearing aids are the most discreet solutions available. Both of these devices are custom-molded to fit in the user’s ear canal. ITC hearing aids are the larger of the two options but retain the ability to connect to devices via Bluetooth.. CIC hearing aids are completely hidden in the user’s ear, however lack Bluetooth connectivity……for now.

How do Hearing Aids Work?

Digital hearing aids convert sound into data that is then amplified according to the prescriptive need of the patient. It is very customizable as the hearing aid can be programmed to amplify certain sounds more than others to focus on the user’s main hearing issues and comfort.  This is done similarly to programming a computer program. Digital hearing aids are more customizable, and this is reflected in the quality of sound that is presented to the user.
