National Audiology Awareness Month

2019-07-29T19:55:24+00:0012 October 2018|hearing education, hearing health, hearing loss|

National Audiology Awareness MonthHearing loss is the third most common health problem among older adults in the United States; however, it is not limited to the elderly or aging. Hearing loss in young adults, particularly between the ages of 20 and 29, often goes unnoticed. It is frequently overlooked or dismissed, which is why it’s important that awareness is given more attention. To assist in this awareness, the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) has reserved October as National Audiology Awareness Month and National Protect Your Hearing Month, making it the perfect time to learn more about hearing loss and ways to protect your hearing.

The most apparent sign of hearing loss is simply not being able to hear well. There are, however, other signs that you may experience but haven’t recognized as being associated with hearing damage. For example, if you find it hard to hear or focus during a conversation in a noisy environment, or you find yourself reading people’s lips instead of listening to what they are saying, you may have hearing damage. Other signs of hearing loss is ringing in the ears or the feeling that your ears are clogged.

As a precaution, it’s best to visit an audiologist at the first sign of hearing loss. An audiologist can confirm any damage already caused to your hearing, and provide you with devices or treatments you need to preserve your hearing. As with most conditions, the sooner hearing loss is detected, the better it can be treated.

Untreated hearing loss is more serious than many, especially young people, may realize. Hearing loss that is left untreated is linked to social issues including stress, depression, loneliness and isolation. Additionally, it also contributes to decreased psychological and cognitive functioning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
