What to expect during your first visit to the audiologist?

Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to take control of your hearing health by scheduling an appointment with an audiologist. You may be a little nervous about your first visit, especially if you suspect you have hearing loss; however, having a little bit of insight about what to expect during your appointment can help ease your nerves.

Audiologists specialize in matters of the auditory system and can diagnose and treat hearing loss. Like most medical visits, upon your first visit with an audiologist, you’ll explain the reason for your appointment, informing him or her of any symptoms you have been experiencing. Based on your symptoms, age, and ability, the audiologist will decide what type of hearing test to administer. A hearing test will not only detect hearing loss, but also the type and amount of hearing loss you are experiencing. Hearing tests are painless and noninvasive, so if you feel any discomfort, inform the doctor immediately.

Your hearing test results will be displayed on an audiogram. The audiologist will thoroughly review and explain your results. If he or she feels you may be experiencing hearing loss as a result of a separate medical condition, you may be referred to an Otolaryngologist (also known as an ENT specialist). If not, however, he or she will recommend a hearing solution, based on the type and amount of hearing loss you have.

For some, the solution can be as simple as treating an infection or wax removal. On the other hand, others may need a long-term solution such as hearing assistive devices. Luckily, your audiologist is also professionally trained in fitting and adjusting devices, such as hearing aids. If you are recommended hearing aids, your visit is the perfect time to ask as many questions as possible about the recommended devices. The audiologist will be able to answer questions about different types of aids, costs, insurance and more. After deciding on the best solution for you, you will schedule a follow-up appointment with your audiologist to be fitted for your devices.
